Press Release - Cantor Fitzgerald Environment Group Donates Emission Reductions To Make Emissions Marketing Association Annual Meeting Emissions Neutral

Toronto 30 September 2002 – CO2e.com, LLC (CO2e) and Cantor Fitzgerald Environmental Brokerage Services, L.P. (EBS), both part of the Cantor Fitzgerald Environment group, announced today that they have donated greenhouse gas emission reductions from an energy efficient lighting project in Jamaica to offset the estimated carbon dioxide equivalent that will be produced by the Emissions Marketing Association (EMA) Annual Fall Meeting and International Conference in Toronto on 29 September- 01 October. It has been estimated that the conference venue, travel and accommodation for over 160 delegates will create 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2eq). This will be offset by retiring greenhouse gas reductions from a project in Jamaica that supplies energy efficient light bulbs to hotels and other lighting intensive sectors in the tourist industry.

Matthew Most, Chair of the EMA board of directors said: "Cantor Fitzgerald's initiative to make the EMA 6th Annual Fall Meeting and International Conference emissions neutral illustrates the immense power of emissions trading as a policy tool. We are especially pleased with the Jamaica based reductions since the island will host the EMA for our Caribbean Clean Energy conference in December."

Corinne Boone, Managing Director of CO2e is pleased to have demonstrated the power of emissions trading first hand, "Around the world there are thousands of projects like the one in Jamaica that can be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and benefit the community at the same time. By donating emission reductions to make this conference emissions neutral we are creating a vivid illustration of just how simple and worthwhile it is to apply emissions trading to effectively improve the environment.”

Project director Leonard Butler, Director of Ecological Technologies Ltd Jamaica explains that, “we will be using the funds from selling these emission reductions to invest in our next energy efficient project. This project has tangible benefits to the community and demonstrates that the benefits of emissions trading go even further than helping the environment”.

NOTES TO EDITOR:

What is Emissions Neutral?

Greenhouse gases (which are said to contribute to global climate change) are emitted by a range of everyday activities like electricity production and transport, largely related to the consumption of fossil fuels. When running a conference, it is difficult to avoid greenhouse gas emissions. However, the impact of these emissions on climate change can be neutralised through the purchase of emission offsets.

One tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) has the same impact on climate change wherever in the world it is emitted - or saved. An organisation can now neutralise the impact of their conference on climate change by calculating the greenhouse gas emissions released as a consequence of their event and paying someone else to reduce an equivalent amount of emissions. It can purchase emission offsets. In this case, CO2e and EBS will purchase emission offsets equal to the volume expected to be released as a result of the EMA Fall conference in Toronto and donate them to the EMA. The purchased offsets will be 'retired' and taken out of circulation. These offsets are sourced from projects that actively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Such projects create emission offsets in various ways, for example, through improved energy efficiency, renewable energy generation or the planting of trees, which absorb CO2 out of the air.
